Helping With Rio Hondo Youth - A Very Good Day

On Sunday, Glenn and I helped John and Sarah with their youth group from Rio Hondo.

This is what Sarah posted on her FB about the event.

"These kids all said Romans 8:1-17 so for their reward, they got to come to the city and see a movie at the nicest mall in Guatemala City. For some of them, it was their first time to the city, to a mall, and on an escalator. (Kind of funny to watch the escalator part.)

After attending early church service, we drove our 12 passenger van to the other side of town to pick up the youth group at the bus station.  Their bus left late, but made up time.  This group of young people had memorized and recited Romans 8:1-17 to earn a trip into the city.  Several of the kids had never ventured outside of their small village, let alone into the large city of Guatemala City of at least 4 million people.

Can you imagine their eyes wide open as they saw this Oakland Mall, all decked out in Christmas decorations, the electronic waterfall, a 5 star movie theater and trying to navigate an escalator?  It is hard to imagine never having stepped on an escalator before.
After exploring the fancy Oakland Mall, the group enjoyed some Pizza at
Pizza Hut.
Then they watched a Disney movie about Alexander having a very bad day. One thing is for sure, their day was a LOT better than Alexander and his family had.

I am so proud of John and Sarah and their ministry at the farm with the kids in Rio Hondo.  They help out with the food kitchen, Awansa (Awana) program, teach English and have such a love for the kids.  I am glad we could have a small part in their ministry by helping with transportation to get the kids from the bus station to the city mall and back for their day trip into the city.

Team Meeting - Antigua

Saturday we had a team meeting and meal in Antigua.  We all drove up to Antigua in our van together. You can't complain about the scenery.

We even tried out a new restaurant called Sobremesa.

Both Emma and Jackson enjoyed playing in the court yard at the market.
The Makidon family.
This was a new restaurant for Glenn and me.  The Sobremesa.  We walked out completely full and satisfied with the tastes and also our time with the team.

God's Faithfulness, Left Behind Computer and Uruguay

Last Thursday, we took our good friends, Jim and Cheryl to the Guatemala City airport to check in for their 12 hour flight back home to Montivideo, Uruguay via connections in San Salvador, El Salvador and Lima, Peru.  After grabbing breakfast in the food court and a great visit, we said good-bye to them for their long journey back home.

3 hours later, Glenn got an email message entitled "HELP".  Jim was re-boarding in El Salvador and realized that he forgot to pick up his lap top computer at the security check-point in the Guatemala City airport.  I looked at Glenn and said, "Uh-oh, we may as well kiss that baby goodbye!"  However, we immediately returned to the Avianca ticket counter at the Aurora International airport and explained our problem.

The security guards did mention that there was a laptop left behind and that it was in storage, but that the one in charge was gone for the day.  Glenn needed to return on Friday morning at 8:00am when the employee could properly release the computer.  Glenn spent most of Friday morning jumping through "hoops" to get Jim's computer back.  By that afternoon, Glenn had the computer in hand.

What had already been a traumatic Thursday morning for Jim and Cheryl before they left for the airport almost turned more tragic. You see, their emails and bank information had already been compromised and they had frantically taken some steps to rectify that situation. Although hours passed as Jim "sweated bullets" as he awaited the verdict on the computer, what the enemy had meant for harm, God used for His good and Glory. A talented young man spent several hours Friday afternoon updating Jim's computer and correcting a number of security issues and viruses.

Now, how to get the computer back to the Eberlines in the most safe and efficient way. Hmmmm...

Well, y'all know me. Yep, I offered to hand deliver the computer to Jim.  By Monday morning, Jim had his computer back in his possession.

I have enjoyed the short 3 day visit here in Uruguay with some of my favorite missionaries, Jim and Cheryl.

On Tuesday morning, I went walking along the Rambla.  Montevideo is clean, beautiful and has a European flavor.  I pray for the Camino missionaries here who work touching the lives of the Uruguayans.

Got Milk?

Milk in plastic bags!
Wow, that brings back floods of memories of how we could only purchase plastic bags of milk while living in Bolivia back in the 80's and 90's.
Of course we had the boxed milk on the shelf that I didn't like.
Or we could purchase powdered milk (yuck) that was called KLIM (milk, spelled backwards).
I am thankful for the bottled milk we can purchase here in Guatemala.

Fall Festival

Earlier this month, Glenn and I attended the Fall Festival at Union Church.  What a fun activity for young families.  Wish we had our grandchildren with us.

There was cotton candy.

There were many types of crafts and demonstrations for everyone to learn.

Siguatepeque Honduras

Tag line:

Pray for 25 Camino Global team leaders representing hundreds of ministries in 9 countries. They are meeting this week at the Central American Biblical Seminary of Honduras, focused on vision to accomplish the Great Commission among and with Spanish speakers globally.

Last week,  Glenn was in Honduras for 7 long days to participate in the annual Team Leader's meetings.  The event was held in Siguatepeque, Honduras. There were interactive workshops and seminars. One full day was dedicated to fasting and prayer. Everyone was challenged to be more effective, creative and relevant in our ministries. There was some time spent with the Camino Board as well.

I remember back in 1977, spending 3 weeks in this sleepy little town while on my missionary internship.  I remember making life time friends with dear missionaries who I still rub shoulders with and communicate with.  I'm thankful for the experience that Glenn was able to gain these past days along with leaders from other countries.  I'm thankful that nothing major happened on the home-front except for a stopped up toilet for only 1 day.

Welcome home Glenn!

Identity

Identity – A government document issued by our countries of citizenship that indicates all the countries we have visited or lived in – otherwise known as a passport.

I read this quote in a blog I follow.  Very Interesting and Very True. CommunicatingAcrossBoundariesblog.com

Last week, Glenn took my passport into the US Embassy to get additional pages put in.  I felt so helpless because I don't like not having my passport in my possession.  I was thinking it would be several days before I would get it back.
However, Glenn returned 2 hours later (traffic) and said, "Even though last week, the embassy said I could just bring in the application with your signature on it and pay the fee to get extra pages, Judy, you now have to be present to submit the passport."
Ugh.  So, we drove back down to the US Embassy and before noon, I had the additional pages in my passport.
Boom. Done!

Where has your passport taken you?

Hang-Over

How would you like this job?
I think they have safety harnesses on!

And you even have an audience to watch you work.
