Travel Woes

We never know how our day will turn out. Several weeks ago, a group from SC were working with Niel and Diana here for a Spring Break ministry trip. The group had airline problems from the first day, and the team was dispersed to travel on 3 separate days. Glenn helped on Tuesday, by driving 6 of the young people out to PatzĂșn.

The following day, 6 "lost baggage" arrived and we picked up those bags and brought them out to the team. We're thankful for these middle schoolers giving up their Spring Break vacation for a ministry trip.

KTLF Keeping the Lord First

Last week, I was doing my normal morning routine. Listening to my favorite radio station on line and having my morning devotions. I hadn't really heard much of what the DJs were saying, but all of a sudden, I heard them say "Call the station with the correct answer and we'll give you the prize. Answer the question, "Name 2 of Isaiah's sons!"

I quickly "googled" the words Name of Isaiah's son, read the answer, dialed the toll free number and got a hold of the DJ. I had the correct answer

The radio station mailed the book, CD and t-shirt to Dallas, then our friends, the Coolboughs brought the goodies down last Wednesday to Guatemala.

By the way, the radio station that I listen to on line is based in Colorado Springs, KTLF (Keeping the Lord First). I especially like their easy listening instrumental music during the evening hours.

Always Room For One More

Coolbaugh family of 6
luggage for Coolbaugh family
Foote family of 6 who live in Santiago
+ 6 extra pieces of luggage that arrived 3 days late for a SC team
---------------------------------------------------------------------
1 crowded Van

There is always room for 1 more in Glenn's van. While visiting the Foote family in Santiago and dropping off the extra 6 pieces of luggage that we had picked up at GUA airport (3 days late compliments of Delta Airlines) we were pretty crowded for just a little bit.

Passing away

Just a few days ago (April 1), I had posted a quick blurb about Maude being 110 years old. I just learned that she passed away during Easter weekend. Amazingly she is spending her Easter Sunday with Jesus this year!

Mt of Olives

Several years ago, Glenn and I took a "trip of a life time" to Israel. It changed our perspective on how we understand our readings in the Bible, the culture of Israel and the geography of this Bible Land. Now, when I read scripture it comes to life.
Imagine these thorns made into a "crown"!

Jerusalem as seen from the Mt. of Olives.
Ancient olive trees!

Hands of an 86 year old woman!
Several weeks ago, Glenn and I stopped by the Artesanias shop in Antigua, where they make wooden fruits all by hand and a small lathe machine.

Coffee Plantation

Only 6 other countries produce more coffee than Guatemala.

Coffee beans drying out in the sun.
Coffee trees grow for about 15 years, then they are replanted. The soil here in Guatemala is rich from the volcanic activity. Coffee bushes thrive on the rich soil, mild temperatures and grow well under the planted shade trees.

If you read this, and would like for us to purchase some Guatemalan coffee for you (cheaper here than in the states), please let us know.

Oh, My Aching Back

Your local Fuller Brush man! Remember them?
Let's see, what is he selling? Clay pots, Dust pans, fly swatters, Colander.
Notice the way it is strapped on his head.

We were just returning from the hospital to visit a missionary who had back surgery. Go figure!

Violence on the buses

Over the past several days and weeks, there has been increased violence and killings on the public buses. Newspaper headlines last week noted that at one 4 stop intersection in zone 9 that there were 4 bus drivers killed on 4 different buses at the same time.

We have noted that these crimes have increased, some are random and some are deliberate. 800 bus drivers resigned from their jobs because of the increased killings. And for a country where the majority of the population relies on public transportation, this can really put people in panic. I have noticed more lines of Guatemalans waiting for their buses.

Happy Birthday - Helen E

Saturday, Glenn and I visited David and Helen at the hospital in Zone 4. David had back surgery the day before. On Saturday, Helen was celebrating her 81st birthday.

As Glenn and I were stuck in traffic on the periférico, we purchased these roses for Helen (only 3.00 USD) as the guy was walking between the lanes of traffic. To put it in perspective, that is like being on 635 in Dallas and having vendors come to your window selling flowers, cell phone chargers or phone cards. Because it was dark, we didn't notice that one of the roses was a different color. :(

Glenn asked Helen for her to recount a favorite birthday. Then David chimed in and said "You got engaged on your 20th birthday!" Helen then told us how they were both MKs and had met when they were 13 years old living in a boarding school in North Carolina. Helen was an MK from Bolivia and David from Guatemala. They went on to tell us that within a week of their wedding they rode the train from Chicago to Dallas for an interview with the Central America Mission Board and then began attending linguistics courses in Norman, OK.

Oh, the stories these sweet people have. They have such a rich heritage. I'm thankful to know them. I look forward to hearing more of their stories here on the mission field.
