After the Conference, we hosted a Moody Alumni Gathering in our home.

Gene Getz, alumni, former faculty member and now Trustee member of MBI, spoke with the alumni that gathered at our home. Gene spoke of his journey with MBI as a student, then joining as an Evening School director, and now most recently as a Trustee of Moody Bible Institute.

Keith and Debbie along with Chad and Kelly from First Baptist Liberty City. Thanks for your contributions to our Conference. We appreciate the music and the help with youth and child care! Come back again.

Cracked Feet and Crock Pot Food

Thursday night, Glenn and I drove over to a missionary home to deliver their evening meal. I had prepared the roast in the crock pot the day before, however, our schedule changed and we were able to deliver the meal on Thursday night.

You see, this missionary is battling cancer for the second time. Several years ago, having gone through the same routine (you know what I mean, the chemo, hair loss, miserable feeling, getting a clean bill of health), and now it has returned.

Once we put the warm pot roast, cold bag of salad preparations down on the table, we made our way into her living room. Beyond the large bay windows we could see the trees and hear the birds chirping. We chatted and visited for a while, told stories about our children and heard about their Europe journey several years ago.

Asking permission, Glenn gathered his brown towel and Foot Massage cream and proceeded to give her a foot massage. (Back track, Glenn got a foot massage back in February at the Intermission conference and volunteer from Michigan gave Glenn some basic Instructions). Fast forward, now Glenn was able to give her a relaxing foot massage. Not only that, the husband got a foot massage too.

We never know what our days bring us, however we are blessed to have this opportunity to share "crock pot" and "cracked feet".

Nephew, Kyle Marr, helped with the youth program during the conference. He hung out with Chad and the teens. Pictured here is Kyle with missionary Johnny Coker.

Saturday afternoon was FREE time. Some ladies joined me in "card making" project. Cindy Spaugh is showing off her art work.

Lots of choices but plenty of fun

This is a Beautiful "saw dust shaving" carpet in the hotel lobby. It is a replica of the beautiful artwork that goes on during Holy week, just the week before.

Speaker Gene Getz and CAM Missionary Wilfred Johnson meet in Chimaltenango on our way to our Conference. We gave a quick tour of GBS to our visitors.

We ate at Las Palmas Restaurant in Antigua before the Conference started. I like how this Restaurant is decorated - colorful

Kyle couldn't get enough of the STEAK! This was also Gary's favorite menu item.

Approaching the Dump - The Guatemala City Dump. Buses come and go providing transportation for folks to be able to salvage stuff at the dump.

Hundreds of people live in the dump. Ostracized by the general population, many spend their entire lives in the dump, subsisting entirely on scavenging -- for food, clothing, everything. In the past few decades, the problem has worsened to the point that many of these dump dwellers have never known of any other life: They were born and raised entirely in the dump. Their parents and their parents' parents have lived there all their lives. Glue sniffing is also common problem among dump dwellers, as it gives a temporary high and deadens the smell of the dump.

Even among the dump dwellers there is an established social order. People with seniority are at the top of the social strata, and get the garbage from the trucks that came from the richer areas of the city, while newcomers start at the bottom.

The dump also functions as an informal recycling industry. People specialize in collecting specific items or materials, which they sell for reuse or as raw materials.

Some of these photos were received from other sources.

Keith and Debbie Wilkerson along with Chad and Kelly Alexander from First Baptist Liberty City in Texas, flew down to Guatemala to help us with our 2008 CAM Guatemala Conference. They did arrive a day early to get use to the climate and to "visit" the sites around the city.

Chad and Kelly were the youth director for the church for many years. He know heads up the Family Division of the church. Our Gary would travel with Chad and Kelly down to Mexico to work in the San Buenavatura Church there. Gary loves hanging around with Chad, even though Chad uses a Mac Computer.

Keith lead our worship at Conference. He brought his key board and guitar. Wonderful. We were able to drop him off at SETECA and was able to tour the Music department there. Janet W was able to show Keith the ministry that CAM has here in Guatemala and was able to share some needs for the music department also. I know Keith was on email to several folks looking up connections for Janet.

The Calm before the Storm

Time Flies. In the past few weeks/months, we have
* said "goodbye" to Grandpa Stewart
* held a memorial service (Thanks to those that shared with us...It was Beautiful!)
* moved Grandma Vi into a 1 bedroom apartment
* helped find a more dependable car for Grandma Vi
* processed the needed paperwork for Grandma Vi
* worked on taxes (Glenn did that...and most of the above)
* drove Gary back to JBU and participate in Parent's weekend
* returned back to Guatemala in our Pastoral Care job
* visited with Lois from Canada work team (her husband died just 1 year ago, and it was good to reconnect back with her and help the team get to the airport
* Attended Intermission Conference in Antigua
* hosted several families in our home
* connected with many of the CAM families here; prayed for them
* hand made Karen's wedding Invitations
* visited with CAM folks here - listening and encouraging them
* worked on final preparations for our CAM conference (March 28 - 30)
* wrote 164 personal notes to answer the Christmas notes and correspondance
* organized Ladies craft project for conference (card making)
* sent out monthly email update to the CAM Guatemala folks, just keeping them in touch with everyone
* made and mailed Birthday cards to the CAM missionary community for the month of March and April

We are in the final days of Conference preparation. The Annual CAM Guatemala Conference is being held in Antigua, just about 45 min. from our house. Our goal for the conference is to have each CAM Members feel appreciated, loved and prayed for and nurtured in the Word of God. We have Dr. Gene Getz and his wife, Elaine, from Dallas here, bringing the messages. Because the CAM field has changed drastically in the last 18 months from a "retiring field" to a "new family field", we are having 2 couples come from our supporting church in E. Texas (First Baptist Church Liberty City) to help with the youth program and child care for the 17 kids/youth we have now. Just a few years ago, there was only a handful of MKs on the field, now we are busting at the seam. One of the couples will also be leading us in our worship.

So, do pray that we can encourage the CAM missionaries. We have put together nice gift bags full of goodies, books, candy and little stuff, so hopefully that will put a smile on their faces and encourage them in their journey.

I'll try to post my blogs more regularly again.

Donald Glenn Stewart was born to Glenn Gibson and Sadie Almeda Stewart on September 25, 1922 and grew up in a farming community in Southeast Nebraska. He grew up in a Christian home and gave his life to the Lord at an early age. After graduating from high school at age 16, he attended Tarkio College in Missouri. Don returned to Nebraska to teach for a year in a one room school house and then farmed for seven years with his father.

Don enrolled at Moody Bible Institute where he graduated in 1951 with a major in missions. While at MBI he met and married Shirley Lucille Gamble. They spent a year studying Greek and linguistics at Wheaton College.

Don and Shirley joined Wycliffe Bible Translators, went through SIL training during the summer of 1952 and began serving in Mexico with the Mazahua people. In addition to reducing the Mazahua language to writing, producing literacy materials and Old Testament Bible stories, the New Testament was dedicated in January 1971. Don was instrumental in recruiting the Mazahua people to have a major part in distributing the Word of God including broadcasting it by radio.

Don and Shirley's two children were born in Mexico. Sarah Lucille Stewart Barger has been teaching yough children for more than 20 years and is currently teaching in Van, Texas. Glenn Clark Stewart serves the Lord with his wife, Judy, in Guatemala with CAM International. Don's grandchildren are Ellen Kay, Karen Elizabeth and Gary Glenn.

After a valiant fight against cancer, Shirley passed away in 1990. Four years later Don was united in marriage to Canadian, Viola Reimer, also a member of Wycliffe Bible Translators. Among many other ministries, Viola worked with the Otomi people, a language group related to the Mazahua. Don and Vi were married nearly 14 years together before Don's death. They lived and participated in the Wycliffe community in Dallas, morst recently living at the Cowan Building.

Having suffered from various health problems in recent months Don went to be with the Lord he loved and served Saturday morning, February 16, 2008 from congestive heart failure and complications.

Memorial Services at 7pm Monday, February 18 at the International Linguistic Center, 7500 W. Camp Wisdom Rd. The family suggests memorials be made to Mazahua Literacy through Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Founder's Week at MBI

Glenn and I were up in Chicago for 1 week. I participated in Moody Alumni Board meetings (during the Super Bowl). I did get to watch the last 2 minutes of the game. Glenn was the van driver for the Board members and did a great job. Again like previous years, we enjoyed reconnecting with old friends and making new ones.
I'll post more pictures and later. We are in Dallas for a bit to see Glenn's dad, plus later today, we'll be driving over to E Texas to see Ellen and later we'll be up at JBU to see Gary and participate in Parent's weekend.
