Between a Rock and a Hard Place

So, I'm encouraged recently, as Glenn and I have been walking each morning. I like to walk very early in the morning to start off my day. We're usually walking before dawn. Thursday morning Glenn left early to take Dan so he could catch a ride down to SETECA with Fran. So I told Glenn I would go ahead and start our morning walk without him.

Then it happened. My right foot slipped and twisted on a small stone. I fell to my hands and knees. I cried because Glenn wasn't there to help me up. I hobbled back home to wait for Glenn to return.

Glenn took me to the doctor for x-rays.

Mind you, these are old machines. During one x-ray, the technician had Glenn push the button, while he held my ankle in the correct position.

Diagnosis: Fractured right ankle bone

Remedy: Stay off my foot for 2 - 3 weeks

Wear my boot, get plenty of rest and take some medications.

I'm thankful it wasn't as serious as my last break, which was my left foot.

Point and Shoot

Last week we hosted a Canadian photographer who spent 6 days with us to capture sights and scenes which will help represent the face of CAM International and the new name of Camino Global. I appreciated Brittany for taking time to give me some personal instructions on taking photos.

As we visited many different CAM ministries, Brittany would have to get down to get the right angle.

We climbed up on top of roofs to get the best angle.

I am not sure if we told her before or after she climbed the ladder, that this was where Wayne fell and broke his foot several years ago.

We visited Casita Benjamin.
The kids loved looking the view finder afterwards and seeing themselves.

We visited classrooms at SETECA and GBS.

And what would a trip to the lake be without visiting Santiago and the Foote family?

We made a visit to Manuela in San Antonio Palopó.

Glenn and I visit Marj whenever we get a chance. On this particular day, she barely opened her eyes. She really did not realize that we were visiting her. However, we prayed with her. We sang her favorite song.

"This world is not my home, I'm just a passing through".

Seeing how poorly she was doing, I said my "good-byes", not knowing if I would yet again see her this side of heaven.

I had 288 email messages that I needed to deal with.

Some were basic emails that I could easily punch the delete button, others required me to "star" them so I could follow up on the information, and others were a simple "reply".

I had been meaning to do this for some time, but just didn't have the energy to do so.

With the business of the holidays and ministry here in Guatemala,
I had let my "InBox" fill up. Way to much.

But now, I have only 25 in my "InBox" YEA!

Waking Up at the Crack of Dawn

Brittany is here for 5 days to do some photo shoots for CAM. We've schedule time for her to take pictures of folks in class rooms, in churches, and typical Guatemalan stuff.

Yesterday we were up at 4:30am to drive to Antigua and take some good morning shots of the sun coming up over the mountains with it reflecting against the walls, cobblestone streets and buildings.

Brittany has given me some pointers in the area of photography. Thanks Brittany.

Tuesday we spent the whole day making our way to Panajachel, stopping in Antigua, Chimaltenango and Patzún. We also took a short drive to San Antonio Palopó to visit Nancy in her shop. (more photos later)

Time to Change

I just hate change. But, change is a part of life. Change usually happens at the most inconvenient times. But it is necessary. I have come to realize that I need to embrace change for it's good.

2 examples come immediately to mind about Changes happening in my life.

Facebook

and CAM International.

Facebook is doing this Timeline thing. I thought to myself, I had better jump on board before I get left behind.

And CAM International is changing it's name to Camino Global. I love the name. The mission is still the same. (So what am I doing now? I'm using up all the current stationery with CAM's logo on it, making way for the new re-branding of the new name. How exciting can that be?)

As I sit back, I can do 1 of 2 things. I can dig my feet in the ground, kick them and scream. I don't like change. Or, I can embrace it as a new opportunity to learn something new, get a new perspective of things and take the opportunity to welcome the change.

I choose the later.

Inauguration Day

Inauguration Day.

Most of the traffic is closed off in and around the airport.

Yesterday, Glenn and I were at the airport to meet a returning missionary, it literally took us an extra 30 minutes to get around all the barricades and fight the heavy traffic.

Today there will be more festivities regarding the Inauguration.

Tonight we'll be heading back to the airport to pick up a new Canadian friend and hopefully the blockades will be disassembled by then.

There was a shooting down at the Central Plaza yesterday.

My Coffee Production

Somehow a Coffee tree started growing in our front yard. I understand that each coffee tree produces 1 pound of coffee per year.

The coffee beans are "Red" at this stage is called "Uvas" which means "Grapes" in Spanish.

They kinda look like grapes, don't they?

So, I've asked Juana, to take care of the processing of this coffee tree.

STEP 1: Juana picks the beans.

STEP 2: Then its time to peal the skin off and wash the coffee beans.

STEP 3: Coffee beans dry out. This takes 10 - 14 days.

I'll post again in a few weeks when we start up the next process of the coffee.

PS We've "bean" putting the cookie sheet of coffee beans out on the patio in the morning and back patio in the evening to dry with the direct hit of the sun.

2011 was a blessed year

filled with accomplishments, graduations, new baby, engagement, weddings, sickness and saying "goodbye" to some veteran CAM Missionaries!

Jordan and Hannah, plus Solomon and Grace arrived as our newest missionaries on the field. We have known Jordan since the 80's when he grew up with our kids in Bolivia. The Selfs lived with us for a couple months before they settled into language school in Antigua and now they're starting their first semester of teaching at the MK school here in Guatemala City.

We completed our official duties as presidents of the John Brown University Parent Association Council. We loved helping out on campus and being a voice for the parents and relating to the students within the John Brown family.

Gary was baptized. How proud we feel to see Gary mature over the years and wanting to follow God's leading in his life. We love you Gary.

Having Ellen and Luke, GrandMommy and GrandDaddy, plus Scott and Barbara come to visit us for a special week during Easter vacation.

Congratulations to son, Gary, graduating from John Brown University. Now he has a full time job there! Just call him the IT Guy!

We welcomed Baby David into our family on July 13. Proud parents are Luke and Ellen who live in Nicaragua.

Over Labor Day weekend, Gary proposed to Madison. We couldn't be more thrilled. A June 2012 wedding is in the works. Gary is the sentimental type. So, he gave Madison my engagement ring which was Glenn's grandmother's ring. In other words, Madison is wearing Gary's Great Grandmother's engagement diamond. How cool is that?

We were blessed by a special 10 day visit from dear friends, Jeff and Kathy. Our families go back nearly 30 years together where we worked, lived, vacationed together in Bolivia. During their visit, Jeff helped us distribute back-packs to the kids at Casita Benjamin, visited the CAM missionaries with us, sampled as many cups of coffee as he could and engaged in various aspects of ministry together.
We laughed.
We cried.
We were encouraged.

We said "Goodbye" to 2 missionaries who served the Lord for many, many years here in Guatemala.

David was born here in Guatemala, was married for over 50+ years, worked on 4 Bible Translations and was a dear friend. He passed away on November 10.

Life Essentials Study Bible

Seven years ago, Glenn and I had dinner with Gene and Elaine and he told us about his project of working systematically through the Bible to compile a Life Essentials Study Bible. From then on, we would jokingly ask Gene, "How is it going in re-writing the Bible?" :) followed by, "Where in the Bible are you studying and teaching now?"

Gene and I served together for a few years on the Board of the Moody Bible Institute Alumni Association. Several weeks ago, we had the awesome privilege to drive a "van full of folks" to the National Palace for an yearly Ballet performance.

Despite the traffic, and getting lost, we made it there in the nick of time.

It was a wonderful experience to watch Katy, the CAM mk, perform.

Tradition Lives On

We had a tradition in Bolivia that when a missionary family acquired a new car (most likely not a brand new car, but new for their family),

we would

treat them to Ice Cream as long as they would drive us in their new vehicle.

So POP's it is. There is a new Ice Cream store in our neighborhood. So we loaded up the car with the Foote kids, plus Jordan and Solomon in their "new" car:)!

David Stands Alone

Last week, while we were attending David's Baby dedication, we enjoyed every minute of being with 4 month old David. We changed his diapers, gave him multiple baths (he loves the water), took him to the mall, rode the train in the mall and also went swimming.

GrandDad did his normal stuff. For the first time, he balanced David on his hands in the water. Then he balanced David in his hands in the living room.

On Sunday, we had the awesome experience to witness the Baby Dedication at ICF where Ellen and Luke attend in Nicaragua.

Of course he was the cutest of ALL the babies there!

Skyping Class

Oct 30 and Nov 6, we participated in an adult Sunday school class via Skype with a group of people from Wildwood Church.

It was fun to chat about our lives and ministry, the political situation in Guatemala, the out of control violence here, and even the beauty of the country and people here.

We shared some prayer requests also.

We turned it up a notch. On the second Sunday, we went mobile with Skype!

We the lap-top in hand, Skype turned on via the Tigo "finger thing", we took the Wildwood Class on a ride. As we drove, we turned the camera around on the computer and focused on the drive. We ultimately drove towards the city dump, Casita Benjamin and the Cemetery.

The down side - you couldn't capture the smell, though, especially the strong south wind from the dump area.

I love technology.

What a great way to get to know your missionaries by using this technology with the computer and internet! Thank y'all for calling us. Thank you, too, for your prayers and partnership.

Dr. and Mrs. Núñez

(About my dear friend Esther, now in Glory!)

Recently Glenn and I made a house call along with Gary and Esperanza to our missionary friends, the Núñez'. We literally had to follow in our car behind Gary as he drove past the old section of town, across Calle Martí and down a winding and curvy road to the colonia in which the Núñez' lived.

Esther had not been feeling well. It was a challenge for her to walk up and down the stairs. They hoped to be moving soon to a one-level house.

I just loved listening (in Spanish) to their stories. Hearing them talk about their experiences, friends and ministry that they have had over the years.

Glenn says, "Dr. Núñez, is like Dr. Howard Hendricks at SETECA (a similar seminary to Dallas Theological Seminary)." And I can say, I see why. He is well respected, intelligent (having written several books with another on the way) and very loving.

What a privilege to serve in pastoral care and when I think I'm ministering to them, in reality, they are ministering to me.

(I had this Blog to go out this next week, but will post it now. We just got a call this morning at 5:30am that Esther passed away at 3:00am this morning. There will be a burial today or as late as tomorrow. I grieve for the fact that within 4 days, 2 CAM missionaries (David and now Esther) have passed away. Both will be missed!)

David Ekstrom

David Ekstrom passed away yesterday morning. We count it a privilege to have known him over these past few years. There have been many tributes posted about him in the past 24 hours. Check out Daphne's words!

Dave and Helen have served in Guatemala with CAM since 1950. They translated the Bible into K’anjobal, San Mateo Chuj and San Sebastian Chuj and were currently working on the Jacaltec Old Testament. Their ministry has also included radio, leadership training, medical work, construction, children’s classes and many other endeavors. {quote: Steve S}

Today CAM International and the Christian community in Guatemala lost a hero. David Ekstrom went to be with the Lord this morning. He was 85 years old. David leaves behind a legacy of 60 years of faithful ministry. He and his wife, Helen (who survives him), dedicated their lives to Bible translation among indigenous peoples in Guatemala, including the K’anjobal, Popti' (formerly Jacalteco), and Chuj. {from CAM International FB page}

Friendship Through the Years

We have appreciated the friendship of Jeff and Kathy over the years. We have vacationed together, attended their kids' weddings, ministered together in Bolivia and have enjoyed long laughs.

While they were here, we drove out to the lake and went to Casa Del Mundo.

I'm proud of them for both zip-lining at Cables Extremos in Panajachel.

We visited San Antonio Palopó and they got dressed up in the local garb.

Jeff enjoyed MANY good cups of coffee.

They shared with us as we visited many different missionaries here in Guatemala.

We all enjoyed a delicious "Económico de Lomito" at Media Cancha.

They helped us hand out 90 backpacks to the kids at Casita Benjamín.

We also had a chance to go to the Hot Springs at Santa Teresita.

Thanks, Jeff and Kathy, for coming down and encouraging us...for helping us with our ministry as we visited folks and places along the way. Come again.

Mar Maya

Because Monterrico was flooded out we decided to try out a new location at the Pacific Beach by driving down to Sipacate and check out the Mar Maya Resort. We were surprised that we had to take this boat over to the hotel complex. I felt like I was on the Jungle Cruise ride at the Magic Kingdom in Disneyworld. Water was seeping up through the floorboard.

It was just a little too rustic for me, so we didn't stay.
Just say'n!

Upon returning to the dock, we were greeted by these young boys swimming in the lagoon.

Then I noticed the boys were swimming in their "birthday suits"! We all had a big laugh.

Casita Benjamín

We were given 90 backpacks from Grand Prairie Bible Church several months ago as a donation for Casita Benjamín. So, we took the Orcutts with us and spent the morning at the Day Care Center having a program for the kids and handing out the special backpacks.

Each backpack had toothpaste, toothbrush, soap, glue, pencils, colors, a small Gospel of John and some small Spanish tracts.

Jeff and Glenn sang a few songs with the kids, then Jeff gave the gospel presentation as he talked about receiving a free gift (backpacks from GPBC) and then talked about the free gift of salvation.

I still remember the smiles on the kids faces and their excited sounds as they opened up their backpacks!

Thank you GPBC for your sacrifice and donations and partnership!

We drove over to Nancy's place in San Antonio Palopó for the Orcutts to purchase some items but also to get dressed up in the local garb of the Palopó community.

We have seen "M" grow up over the years and have had fun interacting with her with friends such as the Josephs, Alexanders, and Wildwood Church. Jeff was again able to share the Gospel with "M". He gave her the Gospel of John and she read the first chapter to us. Although she is K'achiquel, she knows Spanish from school, so she was able to read the Spanish scripture portion. Jeff challenged her to read the Bible daily.

Tailor Made

Jeff walked down Santander in Panajachel and spotted a local tailor and had him hand make a specialty shirt for him.

Jeff took the opportunity to share the gospel with the tailor. He found out that he was catholic and was basing his faith on his good works.

I kinda like these local pants, but Jeff didn't spring for them.

Jeff grabbed a cup of coffee just before he and Kathy did zip-lining in Panajachel. I'm wondering if it was to calm his nerves? But the coffee wasn't as good as specialty café here in Guatemala.

Jeff was a little hesitant to stop at McDonald's in Antigua and have a cup of coffee at the very quaint McCafé near the plaza!

Jeff never did try Starbucks coffee here in Guatemala.

Jeff and Kathy met our friend Caroline and her husband who have a coffee business right near the Guatemala City airport. Jeff purchased some bags of Godoy's , so he will have to rank it himself. It was fun to watch them roasting the coffee and smell it too.

Just as Jeff and Kathy were leaving, we had him try the coffee shop upstairs at the Guatemala City Airport, & Café.

6.9 Pilandros Café

Glenn served Jeff coffee from Jope coffee (medium and dark roast) (7.9) and Cafe Altura (8) here at our house. His least favorite was Pilandros cafe which is a coffee shop and a candle making location too. We understand that scents from candles just don't mix with coffee.

Jeff's first cup of coffee here in Guatemala was at El Cafetalito. He was impressed even though he was drinking out of a "to go" cup.

Long Time Bolivia Friends

Jeff and Kathy came to visit us recently for 10 days. We had a blast! It was also fun to re-connect with some old friends too, even though we were in Guatemala - we made some connections.

Marj served in Peru for many many years with South America Mission. Now she is retired and lives with her daughter here in Guatemala. We enjoyed going over to visit her and recalling precious days when she worked in Peru.

Jordan grew up as a missionary kid in Bolivia and now he serves here in Guatemala with his wife and 2 kids.

Tom and Mariellyn served in Bolivia for many years and now serve here in Guatemala. They worked at SCCLC, the missionary kid's school where our kids attended, and Mariellyn was Ellen's kindergarten teacher.

Blog Away

A friend asked me the other day "Are you still alive? I haven't seen blog posts from you recently."

Yes, I'm still alive but I haven't blogged in several weeks, however that my goal to get back on track in the next few days. As a matter of fact, we are in Guatemala. We've just been busy with ministry and life. We've done some traveling to Panajachel and here in the city. We've been blessed to have good friends, Jeff and Kathy here for a short visit.

In the next few "posts", I will be writing about some of the ministry we shared with Jeff and Kathy.

Rains in Panajachel, Guatemala

Rain, Rain and more Rain

We arrived here in Panajachel on Monday night, having come the "back way" because the main road from Sololá to Panajachel was washed out. Fog, potholes, landslides and rain made the back road challenging and scarey at times.

Yesterday, we ate breakfast at Casa Del Mundo (notice how high the water is...over 18 feet higher than normal). Delicious! Then we had lunch with the Foote family. What a sweet family.

We had to introduce Jeff and Kathy to Mike at CrossRoads Café in Panajachel. Jeff loves Coffee, so this was special. The coffee was only "outdone" by the entertainment. :)

All day today it CONTINUED to rain. We have had a fire going in the fireplace. We hear dynamite blasts off in the distance where they're working on reconstructing the road between Sololá and Panajachel.

We don't know what the road conditions will be like tomorrow, but hopefully, we'll be able to get out.

Our Friend, Jesse

Jesse is Number 4 out of 11 children.

His mom and I attended Moody Bible Institute together back in the 70's. Over the past 30+ years, we would run into Jesse's family either in their beach home in Florida, cabin in Wisconsin, Founder's Week and Moody Alumni Reunions in Chicago.

Back in the summer, Jesse came to Guatemala for a 3 month visit to do various things, such as reflect, study the Word, study Spanish and learn the culture. When he arrived, we introduced him to several dear friends in Antigua. We loaned him a cell phone that had recently been donated to us. (Thanks Richmonds!). We didn't see much of him during his 3 month stay.

Just a couple of days before Jesse returned home, we hosted him in our home. He was able to help Glenn set up 2 computer monitors down in his office. We showed him different ministries here in Guatemala, such as Casita Benjamín, SETECA, TGN and even gave him a "birds eye view" of the city dump.

And we served him our traditional Bolivian Monday night dinner - Beans and Rice!

Cheezy Chower

If you have these ingredients, you can make a delicious soup!

I cut the recipe out of an old 1980's Good Housekeeping magazine during our first year of marriage. We love it. I have served it many times to my family. It is easy to make, quick and simple. It is delightful for a rainy day.

1 Chicken Bouillon cube

1 1/2 cups boiling water

2 cups chopped potatoes

1 10oz pkg frozen mixed vegetables

1/4 cup chopped onion

1 can Cream style corn

1 8oz. jar of Cheez Wiz or 1/2 lg box of Velveeta cheese

1/2 cup of milk

Dissolve bouillon cube in hot water;

Add potatoes, milk, vegetables and onions.

Cover, simmer for 10 minutes or until vegetables are cooked

Stir in remaining ingredients;

Heat until cheese is melted and chowder is hot

Makes 6, 1 cup servings.

Hang On for Dear Life

This is a normal occurrence. Small mini-van/buses that are full of passengers, even have some passengers hanging on for dear life.

We were literally going 70 kilometers (42 miles) an hour.

This young fellow collects the fares as folks get off the vehicle. He might try to get inside if there is room and if the driver stops long enough.

That is one way to travel.

Junk or Treasure

Earlier this week Glenn and I were driving in Zone 3 near the Guatemala City Dump and I couldn't help but notice the trash that was gathered on the street.

These guys were literally stripping the car apart, salvaging any possible part to re-sell.

"Junk is stuff you throw away, stuff is junk you keep."

In this case they scavenge for everything.

The Sandwich Years

They call it the

Sandwich years.

I can tell you that we are a living example of the "sandwich years". On one side we are experiencing new birth, new life, new beginnings as we are blessed with our new, little grandson David.

And on the other side, we are experiencing moments with my parents, known to so many as GrandMommy and GrandDaddy, as we watch them experience the changes that necessarily come with older age, known in Latin America as the "tercera edad". Recently we have noticed that GrandMommy is having difficulty with her memory. Although the doctors have not given her condition a name, they have prescribed some medication.

Mom and Dad still hold hands while walking into church. They continue to be a blessing to many many people.

We love GrandMommy!

I cherish the moments I have with my parents. I value their wisdom and example that they have shared with us kids for so many years.

Do pray for Glenn and me as we balance our ministry and life with our adult children and now as we seek to be more available to my parents in more tangible ways. (as needed)

4 Countries in 18 hours

Just show my adventurous spirit, we followed through with a decision to take the bus from Managua, Nicaragua back home to Guatemala City, Guatemala.

The bus left at 3am and arrived on the east side of Guatemala City at 9pm that night.
18 hours.
Yes, we are crazy.

But we have done worse things. How about the 36 hours from Arica, Chile down through the Atacama desert to Santiago, Chile, in 1994 with the Orcutts and Boerckels. Or, how about the 48 hour bus ride from Corumbá, Brazil to San Paulo, Brazil back in 1988 as a family?

We were in

Nicaragua

Honduras

El Salvador

and then Guatemala

The best part of the 18 hour trip, was the last 4 hours from El Salvador into Guatemala where the bus had free WiFi. I turned on my GPS and could see the road map, and we also made several Skype calls to friends.

We prayed for uneventful travels and border crossings and we were blessed by both and the added bonus of traveling on the front row of the double-decker bus. Thank you Lord.

In My Seat

Yesterday, September 11, we did not have the TV on. We did not see any of the video footage.

However, late last night, I came across this you tube video. I cried. It is a little long, but worth the watch.

I was aware of the 10 anniversary of that riveting day. I remember that day so well, as I watched in honor on TV as the planes flew into the World Trade Towers and then the buildings tumbling down. I was glued to the TV for several days grieving the loss of life, the uncertainty of the future and the realization that life was going to be different from now on.

I learned a new phrase, "Facebook Official".

As soon as the word was spreading that Gary had proposed to Madison, a few friends commented on their FB walls. This is where I learned,

"You are not officially engaged, until you have posted it on FB":)

Gary connected his computer to his TV monitor. Then both Gary and Madison changed their "status" to "engaged". It was fun to start seeing the comments posted on their FaceBook walls, as friends and relatives congratulated them.

Engagement Day

Saturday, September 3, our son Gary proposed to Madison.

Gary drove Madison 6 miles to the Natural Springs State Park in Oklahoma just to the West of Siloam Springs, Arkansas. They walked down to the waterfall. There he proposed to Madison.

As Madison said, "Yes", Gary placed the ring on her finger. This ring was Gary's Great - Grandmother Gamble's engagement ring. It might even be older than that. I wore it for 32 years and feel honored that Gary wanted to pass on this family heirloom to have Madison wear it. Sweet.

Then, as Gary and Madison walked back to the car, the family popped out of the woods. We relived the moments together.

The day was a day of Celebration. We enjoyed Chinese food, had a fun afternoon and an evening together as we had pizza for supper and watched Enchanted at Gary's apartment, joined by some of their close friends.

Cowboys Training Camp

While traveling through San Antonio, we stopped off at the AlamoDome and watched 4 hours of the Dallas Cowboys practices, FREE. We only had to pay $10.00 to park.

It was fun to see the pattern of the team practice, both offense and defense.

Last month, while co-workers, Bob and Shirley (my BFF:) were in town for SETECA, we took the afternoon to show them the nice mall, Oakland. McCafé wasn't too bad either.

Then several weeks later, we visited them in their home in South Texas, so they took us to South Padre Island so I could stick my big toe in the water. Well, I didn't stick my toe in the water, but I stuck it in the sand! That was enough for me.

It was about 7am in the morning, a couple of weeks ago, when Glenn and I were walking in our small neighborhood. One of the Guatemalan ladies was out by her car and it needed a "jump start". Glenn walked home, got the jumper cables and helped start her car.

2 days later, she brought this cute CHOCOLATE bar

in the form of pliers.

How cute is that?

It was her way of saying

"Thank You!"

All I can say is that he is a very good baby.

He sleeps all the time, he barely cries and he loves to be held!

A Few Days in Panajachel

The Richmond family from DC, were down for a few weeks. We introduced them to different folks who could share about their different ministries in Guatemala. They were able to explore Monterrico at the coast, climb Volcano Pacaya, play with the Foote kids in Santiago, zip-line through the rain forest, study a week or two at the language school, attend several birthday parties, volunteer at Casita Benjamin and many other activities.

So how do we know the Richmonds? I just love to see how the Lord puts these things together.

In 1992,at the recommendation of Northwest Bible Church mission pastor, Karen travels down to Bolivia to see what missions is all about. We fell in love with her and have appreciated her friendship through the years. Gary and I flew up to her wedding in Dallas, 1993.

Fast Forward. Karen's mentor from College days, wants to minister in Guatemala so, Karen introduces us to Sheri and Kevin. In 2009 Kevin and Shari bring their 4 kids with them to Guatemala and minister with the Footes out at the lake. In 2010 both Shari's family and Karen's family come to Guatemala to hold optical clinics out at the lake and also take Spanish classes.

It gets better....

Shari introduces us to the Richmonds, so they were able to have a good Guatemala Experience here while studying Spanish at the same time.

God is good!

Heritage Mission Team

Recently, we helped to coordinate and host a group of young people (mainly those in David's Spanish class) from Heritage School in Fredericksburg, Texas on a 10 day
Mission Exposure Adventure trip.
Glenn traveled with the team for 10 solid days as they had a glimpse of different ministries here in Guatemala.

The Team ministered in Casita Benjamín.

They also traveled out to Lake Atitlán and heard about Bible Translation with the Foote family, visited a local city jail here in Guatemala City and visited the City Dump.

Thank you Heritage School for your ministry here in Guatemala. We trust you were able to sense God's presence, fall in love with the Guatemalans and walk away with a deeper walk with the Lord.

The House Next Door Part 1

The empty property next door is no longer empty. Several month ago, the owner decided to start building a home.

Yes, Starbucks has arrived in Guatemala!

Glenn and I visited the new Starbucks recently!

The Frappachino tasted the same as it does in the states.

The new Starbucks is on the other side of the city from where we live.
The store offered WiFi and a nice seating area to relax and enjoy a muffin and coffee.

Then to round out the day, we stopped at IHOP. IHOP is another brand new restaurant here in the city.
A second IHOP opened up just several weeks ago on our side of the city. On Sunday, we noticed a long line of folks waiting to be seated at the new IHOP in our part of the city.

Laundry

You know it is Rainy season when....

You hang your clothes outside to DRY...

and it begins to RAIN

and then the gas Dryer BREAKS!

Ugh!

It is customary for us to wash and then hang our clothes out to dry. The sun can be pretty intense at this elevation, so the clothes dry quickly. However, when rainy season sets in (May - November), it is normally sunny in the mornings and then we usually have a late afternoon shower. Sometimes it will rain the whole day and maybe for several days. So, it is good to have a back-up plan with a gas dryer.

I do have a handyman of a husband, and he determined that the electric motor was burned out. So Glenn has called the repair man to come and help him find an "equivalent" motor for the dryer.
NOTE: there are no Frigidaire places here but they found an approximate replacement motor that should work. They only had to go to two different "hole in the wall" locations to find it.
